The Swiss poet Robert Walser, who spent the last 30 years of his life in a mental institution and stopped writing, is Elfriede Jelinek’s him, not himself – however with no biographical relation whatsoever… With poetic urgency, the existential question as to how and if identity can be formed through speech is articulated.
